These are the symbols used throughout the course.

Notation	Meaning	Example
`cardi/o`	Root plus its usual combining vowel	`cardi/o/logy`
`hyper-`	Prefix placed before a root	`hyper/tension`
`-itis`	Suffix placed after a root	`arthr/itis`
`/o/`	A joining sound, usually without meaning of its own	`gastr/o/enter/itis`
CAPITALS in a sound cue	Stressed spoken syllable	`cardiology`: car-dee-OL-uh-jee
